Bicycling and Walking in Virginia
Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) established a Bicycle Advisory Committee in 1989 as a forum for open communication and information exchange between the department, other state agencies, federal agencies, advocates, and citizens regarding bicycling opportunities across the commonwealth.
The committee reconvened on March 27, 2013 and was rebranded as the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) to add pedestrian opportunities as part of its purview.
Members of BPAC meet periodically to discuss VDOT policies, standards and practices that affect the bicycling and walking community. The committee members are asked to share this information with the bicycling community and other interested groups. Meetings are open to the public.
The committee's format provides an opportunity for members to address a variety of topics and foster mutual understanding. The committee works together on specific projects such as the State Bicycle and Pedestrian Policy Plans, Bicycling in Virginia map, Share the Road signs and informational materials.
Public Comments
As part of the implementation of VDOT Business Plan Item 2.1.2 (p. 12), the members and attendees of the Statewide BPAC were offered the opportunity to make public comments on projects. The business plan item states:
2.1.2 Monitor the ongoing process developed with local governments and advocacy groups to expand opportunities to integrate pedestrian and bicycle solutions into projects. [Multi-Modality; Engagement]
The files below list the comments received from the BPAC members. These comments have been passed along to the VDOT project managers.
